About this care
Welcome to BSO Totempaal, located at Zuidsingel 17 in the heart of Middelburg. We are part of Kindcentrum ABS and provide after-school care for children aged 4 to 12. After a long day at school, there’s nothing better than relaxing and playing with friends. That’s exactly what we’re here for.
At BSO Totempaal, we work with four fixed themes: sports & games, arts & culture, nature & technology, and social skills. This allows children to discover and develop something new every week at their own pace. We craft, build, play sports and games – always tailored to what the children enjoy. We also offer before-school care (VSO). Before school starts, we cosy up with a book in the reading corner or jump and climb in the gym to wake up.
Our location is housed within Kindcentrum ABS, which means we work closely with the primary school. This ensures our activities align seamlessly with the children’s experiences and allows us to respond quickly when needed. We have a large garden where children can play to their heart’s content, and when the weather is nice, we spend a lot of time outdoors.
BSO Totempaal has space for up to 54 children and has been registered in the National Childcare Register since 2010. Our pedagogical staff are ready every day to give children a safe, challenging and above all fun time. Strengths
- Rooms are sufficiently large for the requested number of childcare places
- Safety and health are well ensured in policy and practice
- Pedagogical policy plan and work plan are concrete and available
- Indoor and outdoor spaces are safe and accessible
- The operator has correctly reported changes to the municipality
Shortcomings
- Street-facing windows in the Atelier must be able to open for adequate ventilation (tilt position)
- A finger guard must be installed on the door to the Atelier room
- Doors to storage rooms in the basement must be lockable with key within reach
- Pedagogical work plan still needs to be definitively adjusted following the inspection
- Group rooms for group 2 and group 3 still need to be further furnished
Summary
GGD Zeeland conducted an incidental inspection at BSO ABS (formerly BSO Totempaal) in Middelburg on 13 April 2026, commissioned by the municipality. The inspection took place due to an application to increase the number of childcare places from 30 to 70 and to put two additional group rooms into use. The location meets all assessed quality requirements regarding general conditions, pedagogical climate, safety and health, and accommodation. The indoor and outdoor spaces are safe and sufficiently large. However, several adjustments still need to be made in the 'Atelier': windows must be able to open for ventilation, a finger guard must be installed on the door, and doors to storage rooms must be lockable. The operator has made concrete agreements about this. The GGD advises the municipality to approve the amendment in the National Childcare Register.
