Practical Training Program for Childcare Workers Launched in Schiedam

A practical training program for childcare workers has launched in Schiedam. This was reported by Twee - Het nieuws uit Vlaardingen en Schiedam. The program focuses on training new professionals for the childcare sector, in the hope of finding a solution to the structural staff shortages.

Practice-oriented approach

The practical training offers a combination of working and learning, where trainees gain hands-on experience from day one. This type of program, also known as a work-based learning trajectory, has grown in popularity in the childcare sector in recent years. The approach aligns with the desire of many employees to work alongside their studies, and of employers to get new staff operational more quickly.

For childcare in the Schiedam-Vlaardingen region, the program is a welcome addition. The sector is facing a nationwide shortage of qualified staff, leading to increased workload for existing employees and sometimes even to the closure of childcare places.

What does this mean for parents?

The launch of this practical training has several practical consequences for parents in the region:

  • More childcare capacity in the long term: With more trained childcare workers, childcare organizations can strengthen their staffing levels and potentially create additional places.
  • Improved quality of care: Well-trained staff contribute to the pedagogical quality of childcare, which directly benefits children's development.
  • Stability of childcare places: A larger pool of qualified workers reduces the risk of childcare places being lost due to staff shortages.

Parents who are considering working in childcare themselves can use this type of practical training as an entry route without having to complete a full BOL (vocational education) program first. The childcare worker qualification (level 3) is the minimum required qualification to independently lead a group of children in Dutch childcare.

The municipality of Schiedam and surrounding municipalities have invested in recent years in retaining and attracting childcare staff, including through collaboration with regional training institutes and employers in the childcare sector.
