The Joop Gilliamse Crèche is a parent participation daycare in the heart of Amsterdam, founded in 1982 as an association by Olga and Hein de Haan. The crèche is named after the first child ever to attend. Located at Prins Hendrikkade 165E, it offers a warm, homely environment for a maximum of eight children aged 1 to 4 years.
What makes Joop Gilliamse unique is that the childcare is entirely provided by the parents themselves. Each day, two parents (called 'sta-ouders') care for the children. In addition, every parent has a fixed task, such as treasurer, chairperson, or garden maintenance. A monthly meeting is held to discuss the children, the schedule, and policy matters. All parents hold a valid first aid diploma and a declaration of good conduct (VOG).
The crèche has one mixed-age group and is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It follows the same holiday schedule as primary schools in North Holland. The location is within walking distance of Artis Zoo and several children's playgrounds. A major highlight is the spacious 144 m² inner garden with a climbing frame, swings, sandbox, and plenty of greenery.
Since 2020/2021, the crèche works with an external pedagogical coach. The pedagogical vision is inspired by Riksen-Walraven, Pikler, and Gordon. Joop Gilliamse is fully recognized by the GGD, and parent contributions qualify for childcare allowance (kinderopvangtoeslag). De Joop Gilliamse Crèche is a parent-participation daycare center in Amsterdam with places for 8 children aged 1–4 years. During the annual inspection visit on 13 March 2025, the Municipal Health Service (GGD) identified violations in the area of pedagogical policy (use of photo tree) and safety and health policy (food safety and hygiene). The location was given the opportunity to remedy these shortcomings. Following policy adjustments, additional instruction for the sta-ouders and the purchase of thermometers, a second visit on 24 April 2025 established that all violations had been resolved. The daycare center has also taken measures to improve knowledge transfer to new parents. The GGD advises the municipality not to impose enforcement measures.
