About this care
Welcome to Het Wonderbos, a small-scale daycare centre in the green heart of Appelscha. We provide care for up to 28 children aged 0 to 4 in a safe, homely setting where nature takes centre stage. Every day we take the children outside into our own discovery garden and on trips to the surrounding woods. There they can play with mud, collect seeds, pick berries and simply be children.
Our pedagogical approach is inspired by the Forest School and Maria Montessori philosophies. We believe that children develop best when they are allowed to explore, experiment and make choices themselves. Our qualified pedagogical staff give each child individual attention and create a predictable daily structure with plenty of room for personal initiative. In this way we foster self-confidence, independence, resilience, communication and creativity.
Inside we have separate sleeping areas for babies and toddlers, a warm meal freshly prepared every day, and fruit is always available. We work with horizontal groups: babies, toddlers and preschoolers each have their own age group, so activities and materials perfectly match their stage of development. A before- and after-school care group for older children will also start soon.

Summary
GGD Fryslân conducted an unannounced incidental inspection on 24 September 2025 at daycare center (kinderdagverblijf/KDV) Het Wonderbos in Appelscha following a signal regarding the pedagogical climate and treatment of children. The daycare center offers outdoor-focused care to 28 children in three age groups and makes daily use of the nearby forest. During the site visit, documents were reviewed, an unannounced observation was conducted in the forest, and a conversation was held with the holder. The inspectors followed a group of three children with a staff member unseen during a morning walk and snack time in the forest. They observed positive, respectful interaction: the staff member responded enthusiastically to the children, patiently corrected when a child crossed a boundary, and provided structure and safety. The pedagogical policy (March 2025) is present and being followed. The outcome of the inspection is that Het Wonderbos meets legal requirements on all assessed items. No violations or areas for improvement were identified. The GGD advises the municipality of Ooststellingwerf not to take enforcement measures.
