About this care
Welcome to the preschool (peuterspeelzaal) of Het Startblok, located in the primary school at Burgemeester Van Haarenlaan 871 in Schiedam. We offer toddler care with Preschool Education (VE) for children aged 2 to 4 years. Our team of qualified pedagogical staff guides your child in a safe, familiar and stimulating environment.
We work in a development-oriented way with themes, where play is the engine of learning. We use the Startblokken VVE program and follow your child's development with the digital KIJK! observation system. The toddler groups are called Muis, Kikker and Nijntje and are set up with play corners such as a home corner, reading corner, building corner and theme corner. Each group has a maximum of 15 children per session.
Each child receives a mentor who is the permanent point of contact for parents. We have a dedicated outdoor play area and also use the school playground. Children who qualify for a VE indication can attend 5 sessions per week; other children are entitled to 2 sessions. Summary
Het Startblok in Schiedam, a toddler daycare (peuteropvang) with early childhood education (voorschoolse educatie/VVE) for 42 children (ages 2-4), was inspected on 2 June 2026 by the Municipal Health Service (GGD) Rotterdam-Rijnmond. This follow-up investigation was conducted after an annual inspection on 23 September 2025 during which multiple violations had been identified. The location has resolved three of the five previous deficiencies: the deployment of the pedagogical policy staff member for early childhood education, the deployment of pedagogical policy staff members, and the complaints procedure are now in order. However, two violations regarding early childhood education remain: the staff-to-child ratio was insufficient at multiple points in May 2026 (1 to 8 instead of 1 to 8), and one staff member still does not have the required Dutch language level 3F for Reading and Listening. This employee has started a training module. The GGD advises enforcement action.
