About this care
Welcome to the after-school care (BSO) of IKC De Lente, located in the quiet, child-friendly village of Abbenes. Together with IKC De Lente primary school we form one integral child centre. Our BSO has its own colourful room inside the school building where children can do crafts, curl up on the sofa with a book or play in one of the themed corners. In addition to our own space we happily use the large playground and the school gym.
Every day we offer an activity, but because after-school time is also the children’s free time, there is always plenty of room to relax and do their own thing. Activities range from cooking lunch, sports and games, creative workshops to yoga. During school holidays we organise an exciting and varied programme that always includes at least one excursion – think of a trip to the forest, a playground or the bowling alley.
Children are collected from school by our pedagogical staff or by one of Babino’s drivers. We pick up from both IKC De Lente and St. Willibrordus School: the IKC De Lente children walk to our room under supervision, while St. Willibrordus children are collected by car. Transport is always safe and follows a fixed routine.
On arrival we share a communal snack and drink. There is a daily hand-over with the teacher so we know exactly how the day has gone. Our home group has a maximum of 20 children and is supervised by one or two pedagogical staff, depending on group size. Strengths
- The after-school care (BSO) uses only the safe Hexagon Tumble Bar (Zeskant Duikelrek) and has clear agreements with children and staff about not using unsafe play equipment
- Staff are proactive in addressing identified shortcomings (immediately replenishing paper towels)
- The coach demonstrated immediate commitment to improving policy compliance
Shortcomings
- The health policy needs to be tightened, particularly around handwashing in the gymnasium where there is no washbasin near the toilet
- The policy on using school toilets needs to be better adhered to (checking availability of soap and paper towels)
- The food policy needs to be revised: the overcrowded freezer with frost buildup poses a hygiene risk
- A clear policy must be established for safe use of play equipment by age group once equipment has been approved
- The holder must continue efforts to establish a parent committee (currently alternative parent consultation is in place)
Summary
The Municipal Health Service (GGD) Kennemerland conducted an annual investigation on 4 November 2025 at after-school care (BSO) IKC de Lente in Abbenes. The location provides care for 24 children aged 4-12 years in the school building of primary school de Lente. Although the assessed conditions are met, multiple areas for improvement were identified in the areas of safety and health. The play equipment in the schoolyard poses serious safety risks (high/unacceptable), meaning the after-school care (BSO) is only permitted to use one safe piece of equipment. The health policy shows shortcomings: handwashing in the gymnasium is inadequately arranged, the toilet policy is not being adhered to, and an overcrowded freezer with frost buildup poses a hygiene risk. The holder has committed to revising the policy. No enforcement is required, but these points will be reassessed at the next inspection.
