BMK Launches Workshops on Pedagogical Basis for Childcare Professionals

The Dutch Association for Social Childcare (BMK) has launched workshops focused on the Pedagogical Basis. These sessions are designed for professionals working in social childcare, including after-school care (BSO), early childhood education, and preschool/toddler care.

Pedagogical Basis as Quality Framework

The Pedagogical Basis has been legally embedded in the Dutch Quality Framework for Childcare since 2019. It outlines the pedagogical goals that childcare organizations must pursue in their daily practice. The five core elements are:

  • Personal care – attending to physical and emotional wellbeing
  • Upbringing and education – supporting development and learning
  • Safety and health – protecting and promoting welfare
  • Partnership with parents – collaboration in upbringing
  • Transitions – smooth progression between facilities

The workshops give professionals the opportunity to translate these core elements concretely into their own work situations. By practicing together and exchanging experiences, the quality of pedagogical practice is strengthened.

Practical Working Method

The BMK workshops are characterized by an interactive approach. Participants work with case studies from their own practice and receive practical tools to implement the Pedagogical Basis effectively. This responds to the growing demand from the field for practice-oriented support, alongside the formal quality requirements enforced by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

What Does This Mean for Parents?

For parents using social childcare, this development offers direct added value:

  • Transparent quality – The Pedagogical Basis makes visible what goals the childcare pursues, enabling parents to make better informed choices
  • Targeted development – Professionals who attend the workshops are better equipped to recognize and build upon children's individual needs
  • Improved communication – One of the core elements explicitly addresses partnership with parents; this promotes constructive dialogue about the child's welfare

When selecting childcare, parents can ask questions about how the organization puts the Pedagogical Basis into practice. This provides insight into the professional approach and the extent to which systematic quality improvement is pursued.

The BMK, which represents mainly smaller, often municipality-linked childcare organizations, contributes to the further professionalization of the sector through these workshops. More information about participation is available via the association's website.
