In Weebosch, part of the municipality of Bergeijk, plans have been developed to transform an existing pig barn into a sustainable, green meeting place. A couple from the region wants to use the location for multiple social functions, including childcare, care services and activities for fellow villagers. The initiative was reported to the Eindhovens Dagblad.
From agricultural heritage to childcare
The plans fit a broader trend in the Netherlands where old agricultural buildings receive a new purpose. For the childcare sector, this type of repurposing offers unique opportunities. Childcare in a green, rural setting meets the growing demand from parents for outdoor care and natural play environments.
The combination of care, childcare and village facilities in one location is remarkable. This so-called 'multifunctional center' can lead to synergy benefits: shared facilities, more efficient use of space and a stronger social network in the village. For smaller communities like Weebosch, this type of facility can contribute to livability and the preservation of essential services.
Procedural challenges
Several steps are required to realize this plan. Agricultural business residences and buildings fall under the zoning plan 'Agricultural', meaning a change or environmental permit is required. In addition, the childcare must comply with the requirements of the Childcare Act, including registration with the National Childcare Council and approval by the municipality.
The combination with care functions brings additional regulations, depending on the type of care being offered. For elderly care or daytime activities, for example, different quality requirements apply than for childcare.
What does this mean for parents?
For parents in Bergeijk and the surrounding area, this initiative could mean a welcome addition to the current childcare offering. Waiting lists in rural municipalities are often longer than in urban areas, partly due to a more limited supply of registered care.
- Green care: Children get plenty of outdoor space and natural play opportunities, which aligns with the pedagogical vision of many parents
- Combination with care: Possibilities for intergenerational encounters, where children and elderly people meet each other
- Local facility: Less travel time for parents living in Weebosch or the immediate vicinity
- Future development: The success of this plan could stimulate similar initiatives in other villages
It is still unknown when the childcare can actually open. Parents who are interested would be wise to stay in contact with the municipality of Bergeijk for updates on the progress of the permit procedure.
