Mother pays €1,800 per month for childcare: 'I sometimes feel guilty'

Anne-Flore's (36) personal story reveals the financial and emotional pressure that high childcare costs place on working parents in the Netherlands.

Mother pays €1,800 per month for childcare: 'I sometimes feel guilty'

A childcare bill of €1,800 per month. For Anne-Flore (36), mother of daughter Lola, this is the harsh reality. In an interview with De Telegraaf, she speaks candidly about the financial impact — and the guilt that comes with it.

The gap between benefit and actual costs

Anne-Flore's situation illustrates a structural problem in the Dutch childcare system. Although the government reimburses part of the costs through the childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag), many parents are still left with a considerable out-of-pocket expense. The amount of the benefit depends on combined household income, the number of childcare hours, and the number of children. For higher incomes, the percentage of benefit drops sharply, causing net costs to rise quickly.

The average hourly rate for daycare in the Netherlands ranges between €8 and €10 gross. Without benefit, a full-time place five days a week would easily cost €2,000 or more per month. Even with benefit, net costs remain substantial for many families, especially in the Randstad where rates are above average.

Emotional price alongside financial burden

What stands out in Anne-Flore's story is the guilt she experiences. This feeling is familiar to many working parents and has various sources: guilt towards the child for so many hours of 'outsourcing' care, guilt about spending so much money, or guilt because working barely 'pays off' after deducting childcare costs.

Research by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP) regularly shows that combining work and care is one of the biggest stress factors for young families. The high costs of childcare play a central role in this.

What does this mean for parents?

For parents considering childcare, this story offers some practical insights:

  • Calculate net costs in advance: Use the Tax Authority's calculation tool to see how much benefit you will actually receive. The percentage may be lower than expected.
  • Compare multiple providers: Costs vary greatly between daycare centers (kinderdagverblijf/KDV), childminder/host parent care (gastouderopvang), and crèches. Childminder/host parent care (gastouderopvang) is generally cheaper than formal daycare.
  • Consider staggering work hours: Some families choose to have both partners work part-time, so fewer childcare hours are needed.
  • Talk about it: Guilt around childcare is widespread but rarely discussed. Acknowledging this feeling can help put it into perspective.

The government has taken steps in recent years to simplify the childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag), but the basic structure — where parents advance a large portion and are reimbursed later — remains a financial hurdle for many families. For Anne-Flore, this means settling a monthly bill that is larger than the mortgage of some first-time buyers on the housing market.
