A free paediatric first aid workshop will soon be organised in Amersfoort. The workshop focuses on providing first aid to children β a skill of great importance for both parents and childcare professionals.
Why paediatric first aid is essential
Children often display different symptoms than adults in accidents and medical emergencies. Additionally, resuscitation and other life-saving procedures for infants and toddlers require a specific approach. Consider, for example, adjusting the compression force during resuscitation, the method of opening the airway, or recognising a serious infectious disease in a baby who cannot yet indicate where it hurts.
For employees in childcare, it is also legally required that they possess up-to-date knowledge of first aid. This is enshrined in the Childcare Act (Wet kinderopvang) and the associated quality requirements. Childcare workers must be able to act adequately in accidents and acute illnesses until professional help arrives.
What the workshop will likely cover
Although specific details about the programme are not known, a standard paediatric first aid course generally includes the following topics:
- Resuscitation of infants and children
- Clearing the airway in case of choking
- Stabilising a child after an accident
- Recognising signs of serious illness or infection
- Dealing with unconsciousness, epilepsy and severe allergic reactions
- Wound care and treating burns
What does this mean for parents?
For parents, this free workshop offers a valuable opportunity to acquire essential skills at no cost. Accidents involving children often happen at home β think of choking during meals, a fall down the stairs or a burn in the kitchen. Knowing how to act directly and correctly can be life-saving and prevents panic from leading to incorrect interventions.
Parents who take their child to a daycare center (kinderdagverblijf/KDV) or childminder/host parent care (gastouderopvang) would be wise to enquire about the first aid certification of the childcare facility. A registered childcare facility is required to have at least one person with a valid first aid diploma present in the group. Some childcare organisations go further and ensure all staff complete the training.
The free workshop in Amersfoort demonstrates that municipalities and health organisations are investing in the safety of young children. For parents who wish to take a course themselves: paediatric first aid training is also offered by organisations such as the Netherlands Red Cross and various private providers. These are generally available free of charge or at a reduced rate through employers, health insurers or municipal subsidy schemes.
