The childcare organization is expanding in the capital, where demand for places has long outstripped supply.

Christian childcare provider Junia opens new location in Amsterdam

Christian childcare organization Junia is opening a new location in Amsterdam. This was reported by CVandaag. The expansion marks a welcome addition of childcare capacity in a city where parents often face long waiting times for a place.

Growing pressure on childcare in the capital

Amsterdam has been struggling with a shortage of childcare places for years. The combination of a growing number of working parents, high housing costs for childcare providers, and stricter building requirements means that waiting lists in some districts stretch to more than a year. For parents who have only just become pregnant or recently moved to the city, finding suitable childcare is one of the first and most pressing concerns.

Junia positions itself as a Christian provider, meaning the organization draws inspiration from Biblical values in its pedagogical work. This is generally reflected in an emphasis on closeness, caring for one another, and providing a safe, trusted environment. Parents do not need to be Christian themselves to place their child with Junia; the Equal Treatment Act prohibits such discrimination.

Religious childcare in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has a rich tradition of denominational childcare. Alongside general-oriented organizations such as Partou and Smallsteps, numerous Christian, Islamic, and Jewish providers are active. These organizations meet a specific need among parents who want their children to grow up in an environment where certain values and norms are explicitly passed on.

The government funds religious childcare on the same basis as secular providers through the childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag) system. The Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) applies the same quality requirements to all providers regarding safety, pedagogy, and staffing.

What does this mean for parents?

For Amsterdam parents, the new Junia location offers extra choice in a tight market. Those seeking childcare would be wise to:

  • Register early: Put your child on the waiting list during pregnancy, even if you have not yet made a final decision.
  • Consider multiple options: Do not limit yourself to one district or one type of care; flexibility increases your chances of securing a place.
  • Evaluate the pedagogical vision: With a Christian provider such as Junia, it is advisable to ask during a tour how the organization translates its faith into daily practice.
  • Check your benefit entitlement: Through the Dutch Tax Administration website, you can calculate how much childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag) you will receive, depending on your income and the number of childcare hours.

The opening of a new location is not in itself a solution to the structural shortage in Amsterdam, but every extra place helps. For Junia itself, the expansion strengthens its position as a national player in the Christian childcare segment.
