Why you shouldn't be shocked by the cost of childcare

Key takeaways

  • Gross costs say nothing about what you actually pay
  • Up to 96% benefit possible for lower incomes
  • Have the benefit paid directly to the childcare provider
  • From 2029 you'll pay a fixed 4% contribution
  • Use the Tax Authority's calculation tool

Why does childcare seem so expensive?

When you see your bank statement for the childcare payment, it can give you quite a shock. As explained here (link: 2. het huidige stelsel) and here (link: 7. Tips om te besparen), you first pay the full bill for the care yourself, and that can run into thousands of euros per month. But don't panic—because the largest portion is reimbursed through the childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag). We'll explain how it works.

Look at the bottom line

You pay the full cost of the care yourself to the daycare center (kinderdagverblijf/KDV) or childminder agency. However, the benefit is deposited into your account beforehand, around the 20th of the previous month. This means the money should already be there before you pay the bill. The high amount on your bank statement may feel like the actual cost, but ultimately, you need to look at the bottom line.

Have the benefit paid directly to the childcare provider

Would you rather not see that large amount at all? Then you can have the benefit paid out directly to the childcare location. The government then pays the provider directly, and you only pay your own portion. This way, the amount on your bank statement immediately shows what you actually pay out of pocket. You arrange this via Mijn Toeslagen by selecting 'Toeslag uitbetalen aan opvang'.

Childcare becomes simpler from 2029

It's also good to know that the situation will change from 2029. Then the government will pay the childcare provider directly, without you having to pay the full amount first. We explain the new system here (link: 5. het nieuwe stelsel).

Frequently asked questions

How much childcare benefit will I receive in 2026?
That depends on your income. Up to €56,412, you receive 96% benefit. Higher incomes receive a lower percentage, but never less than 36.5%. The benefit applies to daycare centers (KDV), after-school care (BSO) and childminder/host parent care (gastouderopvang), each with their own maximum hourly rate.
What if the hourly rate of my childcare provider is higher than the maximum hourly rate?
You receive benefit up to the maximum hourly rate: €11.23 for daycare centers (KDV), €9.98 for after-school care (BSO) and €8.49 for childminder/host parent care (gastouderopvang) in 2026. You pay the difference yourself. Ask your provider about their hourly rate and whether it falls within these limits.
Can I have the childcare benefit paid directly to my childcare provider?
Yes, this is called 'toeslag direct aan de opvang'. The Tax Authority then pays the provider directly, and you only pay your own contribution. Not all childcare locations offer this, so check when registering.
What will change about childcare costs in 2029?
From 2029, the childcare benefit will be abolished. All working parents will pay a fixed contribution of 4%, regardless of income. The government will pay childcare providers directly. There will be no more repayments and the scheme will become simpler.
What should I watch out for when applying for childcare benefit?
Make sure you meet the conditions: both parents must work, study or be in an integration programme. Apply for a realistic number of hours that you need. Take changes in your situation into account, as these can lead to adjustments or repayments.
