The Safe Sleep Protocol (Protocol Veilig Slapen), which governs how babies must be put to sleep in Dutch childcare settings, may once again be up for debate. According to a report by Kinderopvangtotaal, there is no clear-cut evidence for the high SIDS figures that underpin the current protocol β which could trigger a new round of guideline revisions.
What is the Safe Sleep Protocol?
The Safe Sleep Protocol is a national guideline that childcare organizations are required to follow when putting babies up to around eighteen months to sleep. Among other things, the protocol stipulates that babies must sleep on their backs, in a sleeping bag without loose blankets, and in a cot free of stuffed animals or other soft objects. The guidelines are designed to minimize the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), known in Dutch as wiegendood.
The protocol has already been revised several times in recent years, partly in response to new scientific insights β including tighter rules around the use of sleeping bags and the sleep environment.
Questions about the evidence base
Now a fresh debate appears to be emerging, this time focused on the statistical foundation of the SIDS figures themselves. If the data underpinning the protocol turns out to be inaccurate or insufficiently supported by science, that has direct implications for the legitimacy of the current rules. Whether β and when β a formal revision will follow remains unclear.
This is not the first time the protocol has come under scrutiny. The childcare sector has previously shown a willingness to update its guidelines whenever new evidence warrants it.
What does this mean for parents?
For parents, nothing changes for the time being. The Safe Sleep Protocol remains in force until an official amendment is made, and childcare organizations are legally required to comply with the current guidelines.
- Babies will continue to sleep on their backs in a safe sleep environment for the foreseeable future.
- Parents with questions about their childcare provider's sleep policy can discuss this with a childcare worker or location manager.
- Any changes to the protocol are typically communicated through the Municipal Health Service (GGD) and sector organizations such as the Branchevereniging Kinderopvang (BK).
