A 66-year-old man, identified as Jan B., has come under suspicion of sexual abuse within the childcare sector. According to reporting by het AD, the man worked temporarily in Amersfoort β as well as in Amsterdam β at a branch of one of the Netherlands' larger childcare chains.
Substitute worker with a brief employment
Jan B. is reported to have worked at the Amersfoort location for only a short period. Substitute workers are commonly used in childcare to cover staff shortages, for example due to illness or high demand. In principle, they go through the same screening process as permanent staff, including a mandatory Certificate of Conduct (VOG β Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag).
Het AD published a photo alongside the article, suggesting that the suspect's identity has been made public in this case β a step that in the Netherlands is generally only taken in serious criminal cases where a public interest is recognized.
Screening and oversight in childcare
The Dutch childcare sector operates a mandatory continuous screening system, known as the continue screening system, run by Justis. This means employees are not only screened when they are hired, but are also continuously monitored for any new criminal offenses. Even so, as this case illustrates, the risk of abuse can never be entirely eliminated.
The organization involved has not yet publicly responded to the reports, at least not based on the information currently available.
What does this mean for parents?
For parents whose children attend a childcare center in Amersfoort β or any other location where Jan B. may have worked β this is understandably a deeply unsettling development. A few practical points to consider:
- Contact the location if you have questions about the suspect's employment and the period during which he was active there.
- Talk to your child in a calm, open way if you have concerns. Avoid leading questions.
- Seek professional support from the Center for Sexual Violence (Centrum voor Seksueel Geweld/CSG) if you have any suspicions: 0800-0188 (free, available 24/7).
- File a report with the police if you have concrete evidence or concerns.
This case underscores the importance of transparency from childcare organizations toward parents when incidents occur, and of a robust screening policy for all staff β both permanent and flexible.
