Following an article published in Kinderopvang Totaal on 2 April 2026, the two largest industry associations in Dutch childcare β the Branchevereniging Maatschappelijke Kinderopvang (BMK) and Brancheorganisatie Kinderopvang (BK) β have published a joint response.
Safety as a priority
The fact that both organisations responded together underscores the importance the sector places on this issue. Safety in childcare is a topic that regularly makes headlines, with the sector frequently facing critical coverage from media, politicians, and parents alike.
The Dutch childcare system operates under an extensive framework of quality requirements and oversight. The Municipal Health Service (GGD) conducts annual inspections at childcare locations, assessing areas including the safety and health of the environment, the educational climate, and compliance with staff-to-child ratios. Locations that fail to meet the requirements may be issued a remediation plan or, in extreme cases, be closed.
Background to the debate
Discussions about childcare safety typically centre on a number of recurring themes: workload pressures on childcare workers, staff-to-child ratios, the physical safety of play areas, and β increasingly β social safety and boundary-crossing behaviour. The sector is under strain from a combination of staff shortages and growing demand for childcare places, partly driven by the phased introduction of the new funding system.
Industry associations play an important role in safeguarding the sector's reputation and offering a counterpoint when they believe media coverage presents an inaccurate or incomplete picture. A joint statement from BMK and BK β which together represent a large share of childcare organisations in the Netherlands β signals that the sector is taking the matter seriously.
What does this mean for parents?
For parents who send their child to childcare, safety is naturally one of the most important considerations. A few practical tips:
- Check the most recent Municipal Health Service (GGD) inspection report for your childcare location β for example, by viewing the scorecard and report summary on Kiddie.
- When visiting a location for the first time, ask targeted questions about their safety and incident reporting policies.
- Be aware that every childcare organisation is required by law to have a designated confidential adviser and a formal complaints procedure.
- Follow updates from industry associations and regulators to stay informed about the latest developments in the sector.
