Montessori BSO De Schakel

Montessori BSO De Schakel is a warm, small-scale after-school care centre in Hoogvliet Rotterdam, located on the ground floor of the Montessori Child Centre at Klencke 601. Since 2010 we have been offering relaxation and fun to a maximum of 48 school-going children aged 4 to 12 who attend our own Montessori school. We regard the BSO as a familiar extension of the school day, free of obligations. Our pedagogical staff create a homely atmosphere in which children decide for themselves what they want to do. The spacious, bright group room is filled with Montessori materials, creative corners, a construction area and cosy reading spots. Children can play freely, do crafts, build or chat with friends. Outdoors we make full use of the large, green schoolyard with climbing frames, a sandpit and plenty of space for sports and games. In fine weather we work in our school gardens; in a playful way children learn about nature and sustainability. We regularly organise outings to the petting farm, the park or cultural locations in the neighbourhood. These activities tie in with themes in the group and stimulate curiosity and social skills. Thanks to the direct link with the primary school, the transition after school runs smoothly and familiarly. Our supervisors already know the children from the lessons and can therefore respond well to their needs. We work from the core values of the Montessori Child Centre: independence, curiosity and care for one another. Together we create a close-knit community in which every child feels seen and heard.
