Welcome to Zien BSO Buitenhof, our after-school care centre located at Eemsgolaan 11 in Groningen. From our spot in the Buitenhof district we offer children aged 4 to 12 a familiar place to play, discover and grow after school. We are part of Kinderopvang Zien, an organisation that has been giving both children and staff room to be themselves for more than twenty years. Our BSO is housed in a spacious, bright building with direct access to a natural outdoor area. Children can move freely between indoor and outdoor play. Inside, discovery tables are ready with natural materials, building blocks and creative supplies. The studio space invites children to craft, paint and build. Outside lies a challenging garden with climbing equipment, sand and water elements and places to build huts or simply lie in the grass. We follow the pedagogical vision of Reggio Emilia and Emmi Pikler. This means we see children as researchers who explore the world with their ‘100 languages’. Our pedagogical staff observe, offer support where needed and avoid unnecessary intervention. In this way children learn to make their own choices, solve conflicts and explore their own boundaries. Through play they develop social, emotional and cognitive skills. The day begins with a shared moment: chatting about the school day, eating fruit together and then freely choosing what to do. We do not offer a strict activity list, but create a rich environment in which children take their own initiative. A child might choose to romp in the gym today, make a stop-motion film tomorrow and tend our vegetable garden the day after. Anything is possible, nothing is obligatory. During school weeks we are open from the end of the school day until 18.30. In the school holidays we provide day care from 7.30 to 18.30. We work all year round, 52 weeks a year. This way the care remains a constant factor for both parents and children in a busy life.
