Welcome to Kinderopvang ’t Hummelhûs at Schoterlandseweg 135 in Oudehorne, a unique farm-based daycare where children aged 0 to 4 play, grow and discover. Our day-care centre is housed in the rear of the farm – the spot where the cowshed once stood – and offers two spacious, homely rooms: the baby-toddler “Geitjes” group and the pre-school group. Soft colours and natural materials create a calm atmosphere; under-floor heating and cosy cots keep the youngest ones comfortable. Outdoor life is central. Children crawl or walk straight into the discovery garden, which contains no brightly-coloured play equipment but instead boulders, tree trunks, hills and greenery that spark imagination. A covered outdoor play area guarantees outside play in any weather. Next to it lies the animal paddock with chickens, goats, rabbits and sheep that the children help care for under the guidance of our pedagogical staff. Getting dirty is part of the fun – overalls are ready for anyone who wants to splash in sand and water. We work in horizontal age groups. The baby-toddler group has a maximum of 14 children cared for by two or three regular, experienced professionals. Continuity and familiar faces are key; when a staff member is absent, a familiar substitute steps in. Babies follow their own rhythm: feeding, sleeping and playing happen exactly when the child signals the need, closely aligned with parents’ wishes. Toddlers move to the pre-school group around 2–2.5 years, after careful consultation with parents and staff. A special service is outdoor sleeping in a dedicated outdoor cot (lutjepotje). Fresh air and natural sounds provide deep, restorative sleep. Even the youngest babies can nap safely in prams outside. Between activities we often head out – by buggy to the animal paddock or on discovery walks in the nature garden. Kinderopvang ’t Hummelhûs offers small-scale, green childcare tailored to each child.
