Welcome to Kinderdagverblijf De Krakeling, a trusted home-from-home for 45 years at Bekkerstraat 24 in Utrecht-Wittevrouwen. We are a parent-run daycare: parents and volunteers run the centre together on the principle ‘I look after your child once, you look after mine’. This creates a close-knit community where everyone knows each other and helps shape every child’s development. Our indoor space is larger than average, giving babies room to crawl and toddlers space to cycle and run. Three separate sleeping rooms with cots let the youngest nap peacefully whenever they need. The enclosed outdoor area lies in the green Bikkershof courtyard, complete with a play lawn, chickens, play equipment and a sandpit. Children regularly sleep outside in the fresh air and discover plants and animals while they play. We use sustainable materials wherever possible – toys, furniture and cleaning products are eco-friendly. All food and drinks are organic: fresh fruit and drinks are included, while you bring your own bread and (bottle) food. This allows us to respect personal preferences and any allergies. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 08:00–17:30. Children from 3 months up to 4 years are welcome for up to five half-day sessions per week (morning or afternoon). You bring your child for four sessions and join one session yourself, guided by experienced parents. On average three parent-carers look after 7–11 children, ensuring plenty of attention. Every parent completes a paediatric first-aid course and holds a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG). Together we form a close ‘Krakeling family’: we organise get-togethers, the annual Krakelkamp and discuss pedagogy and organisation in committees. This keeps De Krakeling a unique, affordable and engaged alternative to commercial childcare.
