Since April 2017, Prins Vleermuis Campus daycare has been welcoming children aged 0 to 4 at a unique location: right at the heart of Wageningen University & Research campus, opposite De Bongerd swimming pool at Plantage 10, Wageningen. We provide care for WUR employees and PhD students, Unilever staff, and any family in Wageningen looking for high-quality childcare. Our professional team of permanent pedagogical staff work in horizontal groups: two baby groups (0–2 yrs), one toddler group (1–3 yrs) and two pre-school groups (2–4 yrs). Each group has its own familiar sleeping area; the baby rooms feature a separate bedroom plus a cot in sight, while the pre-schoolers rest on stretchers inside the group space. For the youngest we follow the child’s individual rhythm as much as possible; as they grow we introduce a predictable daily routine that offers security and room for further development. We believe in learning through play. Our educators themselves design and lead themed activities that match the children’s world—think singing, crafts, language games and outdoor discovery. We go outside at least once every day; movement and fresh air are essential. Short excursions around the campus are organised regularly, always with parental consent. Healthy, freshly prepared meals are included. Fruit, bread lunches and a warm meal around 5 p.m. are provided; parents only supply formula for babies. Nappies and wipes are fully included. Communication is key. We follow the Thomas Gordon approach: active listening, naming feelings and respecting each child’s individuality. This creates a homely environment where every child feels safe and valued. We keep a daily diary for babies and track each child’s development in a personal file. Early childhood education (VVE) is offered through the UK & PUK programme, gently preparing children for primary school. Prins Vleermuis Campus is a miniature society: children from all over the world play together. Every child—regardless of background or language—is welcomed with open arms.
