Het Kleine Volkje

Welcome to Daycare Het Kleine Volkje, located in the monumental former school building at Atjehstraat 32 in Leiden. We provide anthroposophical childcare for children aged 0 to 4 years in a warm, homely atmosphere. Our daycare center radiates peace and security, exactly what fits the care we provide. We have space for 36 children per day, divided across three vertical groups: The Dwarfs, The Gnomes and The Elves. In these mixed-age groups, children learn from each other and develop at their own pace. Our vision and pedagogical principles are based on the anthroposophical view of the human being by Rudolf Steiner, with the uniqueness of the child at the center. The furnishings of our spaces are carefully chosen with natural materials and warm colors. We believe in the power of simplicity: our play materials are simple in form, giving children the freedom to develop their own imaginative play. The cozy play corners and seasonal tables contribute to a comfortable atmosphere where connection with each other and nature is central. Our daily activities focus on experiencing the seasons and celebrating annual festivals. We bake bread together, make applesauce and fold laundry. These healthy and enjoyable activities are part of our 'big household' in which children learn through play. Twice a day we go outside with all the children to play and discover in our natural outdoor space. After the warm meal, it's time to sleep. Most children nap in the afternoon, but we also have 10 outdoor beds for children who find it difficult to sleep indoors. Personal care is highly valued: during diaper changes we take time for one-on-one attention, and before sleeping, babies' feet are warmly massaged with oil. Our opening hours are from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM on weekdays, all year round. Early drop-off from 7:30 to 8:00 AM is possible by appointment. We are closed on national holidays and for one week around Christmas and New Year.
