Schelp

BSO Schelp is a small-scale after-school care located on the ground floor of Jhr. W. Versluijsschool at Prelaatweg 22 in Aagtekerke. We welcome a maximum of fourteen children from grades 5 to 8 of this reformed primary school. Because we form one single group, every child knows one another and is familiar with the permanent pedagogical staff. The Bible is our starting point; we show the children that God loves each of them and that every child is unique. Our room is bright and calm. Children can choose to play freely at the table, in play corners on rugs, or relax on the couch with a book. The BSO cupboard holds games and craft materials that children can take out themselves. We offer activities centred on the themes Nature, Technology, Art & Culture and Sport & Play. Each week one child may design an activity that everyone can join. When the weather is nice we go outside to the church square for movement games or to the sandbox for building and digging. We follow a clear daily rhythm: after school every child is greeted personally by name, followed by free play, fruit and drinks, and a discussion about the afternoon’s plans. Around 17:45 we wind down quietly. On study days, when the BSO session is longer, we organise an excursion in the local area. During school holidays BSO Schelp is closed; children are then cared for at location Oleanderhof in Arnemuiden, where as many familiar faces from our own team as possible are present. Personal contact is important to us. At the start we arrange an individual introduction with parents and child. After three months we evaluate together how things are going.
