Buitenschoolse opvang Michaël

BSO Michaël in Meppel provides small-scale after-school care for primary-school children aged 4 to 12. We are part of Stichting Kinderopvang Michaël and work closely with Vrije School de Toermalijn, together forming an integrated child-centre. Our house at Julianastraat 22 is only a few steps from the school, so children can reach us quickly and safely when classes end. Our approach is inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophical vision. We regard every child as a unique individual and support each one in becoming who they are meant to be. We use natural materials, sensory games and body-oriented activities. Creativity and imagination are given free rein through open-ended materials that stimulate fantasy and through activities that challenge children’s problem-solving skills and creativity. Throughout the year we move with the seasons and devote attention to yearly festivals and rituals. This creates an atmosphere of warmth, calm and attention in which children can marvel and, above all, simply be children. Our days follow a steady rhythm so that children know what to expect. After school we collect the children—sometimes walking and chatting together, sometimes driving in our own minibuses. Back at the BSO a healthy, filling snack is waiting. Children then choose for themselves: join an activity such as making Valentine garlands, a kids’ boot-camp session, or quietly play or read a comic. Around 17:00 there is a second snack and children can continue playing or start a board game until they are picked up. During school holidays and study days we are open from 8:00 to 18:30. We then organise special outings—think of Oud Valkeveen amusement park, the large playground at Heidezicht or an afternoon of ice-skating in Bussum—always using our own buses and at no extra cost. Our outdoor area, designed especially for the BSO, offers plenty of greenery and hand-made play elements made from natural materials, giving children both challenge and relaxation outside. Parents stay informed through our Parent Portal: we share the weekly programme, photos and a short impression of the day. Parents can also message the pedagogical staff directly. As a social childcare organisation we keep our fees deliberately low so that childcare remains accessible to as many families as possible. At BSO Michaël children find a warm bath of personal and loving attention—a place where they feel safe and at home.
