When choosing a daycare center (kinderdagverblijf/KDV), after-school care (BSO), or childminder/host parent care (gastouderopvang), it's important to know whether the staff are properly qualified. One government-regulated aspect of this is the qualification check (diplomacheck). In this blog post, we explain exactly what a qualification check involves.
What is a qualification check?
A qualification check is a verification procedure that confirms whether childcare professionals hold the right qualifications to work with children. This matters because qualified staff are better equipped to safeguard your child's safety, development, and overall well-being.Why is the qualification check important?
Qualifications ensure that childcare workers can do more than provide basic care — they also act in a pedagogically responsible way. This includes actively supporting a child's development and providing a safe, stimulating learning environment. How is the qualification check carried out?
- Qualification requirements: Every childcare professional must meet specific qualification requirements set by the Dutch government. These requirements can be found on the central government website (rijksoverheid.nl).
- Registration in the Childcare Personnel Register (Personenregister Kinderopvang): Every staff member must be registered in the Childcare Personnel Register. This registration requires the employee to hold a relevant qualification and provide a Certificate of Good Conduct (Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag/VOG).
- Verification by the childcare center operator: It is the responsibility of the childcare center operator to ensure that all staff meet the qualification requirements and are correctly registered.
